I joined the Irish Association for Cancer Research (IACR) council as a patient representative in 2018. At the time when I was approached, I had been looking for volunteer opportunities in the cancer field in Ireland, I wanted to give back and help spread a positive message. I wanted to learn about cancer research in Ireland and be able to access expert knowledge to gain a greater understanding of the disease. The council members are a wonderful group of inspiring and approachable folk, for me, it’s been a great learning curve.
I did not realise that my skills as a designer would make such an impact within the first year. The whole experience has been hugely rewarding, challenging and engaging. I set about designing the new IACR logo which then led to working on the new website, designing the 55th Conference Brochure & Banners. This year was the first year for the IACR to use a conference app, I liaised with the supplier and oversaw its branding. I also photographed the conference over the three days in Belfast.
The design work is still ongoing as the brand will continue to evolve with more collateral added over time. I am excited to see where my involvement with the council will take me, it is a three-year commitment, which is ample time to really get stuck in 🙂
